Jonathan Byrd outlasted Robert Garrigus in a playoff to win the invitation only opening event of the 2011 season. Calm winds for most of the week left the course at Kapalua Resort susceptible to low scores and the majority of players took full advantage. Byrd shot 68 or better in all four rounds and finished at 24 under. He became the first American to win the event in a decade as the international players have proved to be much better wind players.
The PGA Tour stays in Hawaii, but moves islands to Oahu, for this weeks Sony Open. This will be the first full field event of the year and will welcome all the new PGA Tour members including those that qualified through the Nationwide Tour Money List. There is no doubt that the fields have become much more competitive and just about anyone that starts an event may indeed walk away with the trophy. This season has the potential to be one of the best on record. Young talent versus seasoned veterans, and the best golfer of all time looking to make a comeback.
