Poulter out at match play

February 23rd, 2011 by

Defending champion Ian Poulter was ousted on the first day by Stewart Cink. While it is hard to call it a complete upset given the caliber of competition but anytime the defending champ loses in the first round it is an upset. The top 64 golfers gathered just north of Tucson at the Ritz Carlton resort for the first WGC event of the 2011 season. Match play is a format that is not used enough in current golf tournaments. It is not exactly television friendly on the weekends simply because so few golfers remain in the tournament. The championship and consolation matches on Sunday often have more commercials and commentator ramblings than actual golf and it can be quite boring. It is also necessary to start the tournament a day early and with fewer players in comparison with a regular tour event. Saying that the format has a rich tradition in golfs roots. It offers a needed break from the usual tournament format. Since the eradication of the International Tournament in Colorado it is the only alternative offered on the PGA Tour.
