Tommy Gainey found the water on the reachable par 4, 17th ending his chances at the TPC Scottsdale. The Waste Management Phoenix Open was a bit of a mess from the start as cold weather delayed the finish until Monday morning. After leading much of the week, Gainey came to the 17th hole just one shot back before his drive found the lake. He then proceeded to knock his third shot in the water after taking a penalty shot.
Mark Wilson played just well enough on Monday morning to make it into a playoff with Jason Dufner. Wilson’s drive nearly found the water on the last hole in regulation, but he was able to save par after a fantastic shot from the fairway bunker. The two traded pars on the 18th in sudden death before Wilson made birdie on the second playoff hole to secure his second win of the young 2011 season.
Wilson is best known for calling a two stroke penalty on himself in the Honda Classic several years ago, a tournament he eventually won. With his play over the last month he has come to the front of the pack on tour.
