"Hatty" Hatfield; Director of Instruction; Total Balance Player Development POSITIONING THE GOLF BALL: Find Your Sternum Center Every one of our golf swings has something in common. The lowest point of the bottom of the swing arc always occurs on our sternum, the center of the chest, or generally between our balanced feet or stance. So if the ball is at rest on the ground, every swing should touch the grass on the target side of the golf ball. If the ball is sitting there, waiting patiently, and we simply rotate the core so the sternum is on top of the ball and deliver the clubhead through the bottom, solid impact will result. Small variations are quite acceptable. I think the short irons might be played one ball back of sternum center, mid irons on center and long irons one ball forward of center. Use an alignment stick or club to establish your center. Drill: Place a towel 1 grip length behind the ball and a penny about 3" in front. In the down swing you must avoid striking the towel...to accomplish this, the sternum needs to be on top of the ball and the swing will feel sharper (steeper angle of attack). If performed correctly you will pass through the ball striking the penny (make it fly). The result is solid contact! Let's talk teed up -- not teed off. Place the teed ball between the target foot heel and toe. Why? Think simple physics and the swinging pendulum motion. If your driver is at the bottom of the swing arc on the sternum, the normal upward arc will put the sweet spot right on the backside of the ball and launch it on the proper trajectory. Simple. Effortless. Incidentally, don't hesitate to start your driver head from that sternum position. The common forward press has a distinct tendency to hurt timing and rhythm.
