Los Angeles County Golf Courses

Looking for a fun and challenging Los Angeles County golf course? Today, there are over 100 different courses you can choose from, which is a feat that never would have been possible if not for the foresight of a man named William Mulholland. The Los Angeles basin was essentially a desert with little vegetation and natural grass before Mulholland brought water in from the Owens Valley.

Perhaps the best way to choose between the many Los Angeles county golf courses is to create your own personal golfing criteria. Here are a few important factors you can take into consideration that will help you narrow your search.

Experience Level

What is the skill level of the least experienced player?

This is important. With so many courses to choose from, there is a wide range in terms of length and difficulty. In 2006, The Bel-Air Golf Course was listed by Golf Digest as one of California’s best. It is a regulation-length, eighteen-hole course that stretches over 6,482 yards. This par 70 course is considered quite challenging, and may be frustrating for less experienced players.

On the other end of the spectrum is the Westchester Golf Course. This par 33 is considerably shorter, having lost three of its 18 holes when the city built a road off of Lincoln Boulevard. This public golf course near LAX is ideal for beginners, novices and those just looking to hit the ball around, but it may not provide enough of a challenge for the most experienced players.

Golfing Budget

What is your budget?

As with skill level, there is a wide variation in green fees for Los Angeles County Golf Courses. The two examples above represent the extreme ends; Bel-Air green fees can be as much as $125, whereas Westchester can be as little as $8 per player, depending on when you play.

Available Tee Times

What tee times are available during the day?

Available tee times also vary from one Los Angeles golf course to the next. Sometimes courses can be booked online so you can see what is available, and sometime you have to call the course directly to find out when there is an opening. If you can book online, it is ideal because you can often find advanced booking deals and discounted prices. Many courses nowadays provide the ability to book online, which often provide additional benefits.

How far do you want to travel?

Since there are so many Los Angeles golf courses to choose from, it should be easy to find a Los Angeles county golf course near your home or hotel. Of course, this may not be an issue if you are determined to “conquer” a specific course or hole that you have read about. Knollwood Golf Course in Granada Hills is a great example of this since its first hole is ranked as one of the toughest in the Southern California area.
