Golf Infographic: Science on the Course

Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening, and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented. While those are not my words, I think that summary of golf by the great Arnold Palmer paints an accurate portrait of the mixed emotions that often play into the game we love. For example, most of us novices become thrilled by the mere sound of contact that a driver makes with the ball, only to notice that the ball traveled in an unintended direction. These are the growing pain moments we have when the voice in our head asks, What just happened? While we may not find resolution in that instant, perhaps the golf infographic, “Science on the Course: The Physics of Golf,” will add some perspective of how things work when we hit the links. This golf infographic was designed by Quicken Loans, who has been the official mortgage sponsor of the 2014 PGA Tour. This nifty visual of the science behind golf is guaranteed to be an eye-opener for golf aficionados. Some cool learning objectives accomplished about the game on the green, include:

  • Temperature impact on the distance a ball travels
  • Details about the effect of a golf ball’s dimples
  • The way a ball travels after it’s hit by a golf club
  • The role torque plays on swing and backspin on the ball
