For the most part, golf is a quite sport (except for when you’re yelling FORE! across 3 fairways). However, it would seem in recent years that this message has not been relayed to apparel designers. Today’s golf apparel is loud, attention-grabbing, and composed of bright colors that would even embarrass the most confident of peacocks. Gone are the days of simple and classic. Today, it’s all about flair and trend-setting (if you can call it that).
Now, style, both on and off the golf course, is a matter of personal taste and self expression. Being comfortable in what you’re wearing breeds confidence, and a confident golfer is a dangerous one. Look good, feel good, play good. It takes a special type of golfer to make our list, and we are neither criticizing nor endorsing any of these looks. We simply want to highlight those who are willing to stand out, and not just for their stellar play on the course.
#5 – Payne Stewart
Payne Stewart is one of the most iconic figures in modern golf, who was sadly taken well before his time. On the course, he was one-of-a-kind. His traditional outfit of knickers, high socks, and a newsboy cap is something a youngster might wear to a Halloween party at a country club. Payne makes our list because he was never afraid to stand out.
#4 – John Daly
John Daly’s outfits look like second grade finger paint. Bright colors swirl and smash together in some kind of kaleidoscopic symphony that only Rain Man might comprehend. John Daly is as lovable as they come because most average golfers see a little bit of themselves in him – the blow-up holes, a fondness for Hooters Restaurants, and willingness to swing for the fences with each and every stroke. America’s fondness for Daly is probably the only reason his look is tolerated.
#3 – Shingo Katayama
For those who are unfamiliar with Shingo Katayama, allow us to give you a bit of background. This Japanese golfer has had a stellar career on the Japan Golf Tour, topping the money list five times, and his best major finish is T-4 at the 2001 PGA Championship. In terms of his style, I’m not even sure where to start. Maybe with the pink glove. Or possibly the cowboy hat. Regardless of where you begin, in the end, your eyes would be better off staring at the sun than his clothes.
#2 – Rickie Fowler
If I wore anything like this to my grandparents’ house, my grandpa would mutter under his breath, “What the hell is wrong with kids today? He should get a man’s haircut.” Rickie is extremely popular on tour, and has an opportunity to use his influential powers for good – instead he chooses pure evil, luring the next generation of golfers to dress like carrots. He wears baseball hats to cover up his Justin Bieber haircut, and he wraps puka shells around his neck. His trademark all-orange Sunday attire is as eye-catching as a car crash bursting into flames. And his attempt at a mustache? There are 7th graders with manlier facial hair. It’s tough to identify any golfers on tour with more potential and talent than Rickie Fowler; however, it’s even more difficult to find one more ridiculously dressed.
#1 – Ian Poulter
It is truly difficult to imagine what Ian was thinking when he put on these outfits, but let’s give it our best shot. Situation 1 – Ian puts on a reflective gold shirt, looks in the mirror and says, “Wow. This looks good.” Situation 2 – Ian puts on a vest of the Union Flag and says, “This will make my country proud.” Situation 3 – Ian puts on pants embroidered with the Claret Jug and says, “These pants will look great holding the trophy.” (For the record, he has yet to win a major). Situation 4 – Ian dies his hair in pitch darkness, turns the lights on and says, “It came out better than I could have ever imagined.” Ian’s style reminds of me of when you watch a fashion show (on accident), see some of those outrageous designs, and say, “That is just completely impractical. No one would ever dress like that.” Correction, Ian Poulter dresses like that.
