Hole #1

“Burn”In Scotland, a “burn” is a stream. Behind the first green lies a tidal waterway, which feeds a large marsh adjacent to the course. The tee shot played toward the left on this straight par 4 will produce the best approach to this green.

X
1

Hole #2

“Dyke”The tee shot plays from the dyke to a narrow fairway guarded by bunkers short left and long right. Down the left side is a shorter route, but a tee shot played to the right will leave the most open approach.

X
2

Hole #3

“Risk and Hope”The line over the right diagonal fairway bunkers surrenders the shortest distance to the green, but be careful not to run too far right and into the natural grasses. A wide bailout to the left will give the less daring a longer, alternate route to the green.

X
3

Hole #4

“High”This hole shares its name and a bit of its design with the eleventh hole at St. Andrews. The tee shot plays to an elevated green, which sits wide to the line of play, but not very deep. Proper distance control will be the key. The green is bunkered middle, front, and back. A bail-out area lies to the left.

X
4

Hole #5

“Hole o’ Cross”If you can carry the fairway-splitting bunker, then you will certainly have an opportunity to reach this green in two. The well-bunkered green angles from left to right and requires great accuracy with the approach.

X
5

Hole #6

“Fin Me Oot”The sixth does not easily disclose its secrets, so “Find Me Out.” The tee shot is blind, which means you cannot see the fairway landing area. A bunker set into the hill defines the proper route. Play a shot over this bunker and you will be well on your way.

Hole #7

“Deil’s Creel”The “Devil’s Basket” awaits you. Not only is this hole long, but also bunkers surround the green.

X
7

Hole #8

“Mak Siccar”“Make Sure” with every shot you play. Although this hole is not terribly long, it will require good distance control and accuracy. The tee shot is bunkered short left and long right. Then, a cross bunker bisects the line of play. The green will best receive an approach from the right.

X
8

Hole #9

“Ca Canny”“Take Care” is the word here. Only an accurate tee shot to this tight fairway will offer a clear approach to the green. A bunker placed short left of the green will make the green look much closer than it really is, so trust your yardage.

Hole #10

“Het Girdle”This name means “Hot Griddle” and describes the shape of this plateau green. This hole is short, but only the most accurate approach will hold.

X
10

Hole #11

“Tabbit Hen”The name refers not so much to this hole, but more a call to “build up strength” for the rigors of the seven holes yet to play. The tee shot here must stay a bit right to avoid the left tree on your approach. A bunker short right of the green hides a bail-out area.

X
11

Hole #12

“Heich o’ Fash”This potential birdie hole could kill many a good round. The “Height of Trouble” refers to the green, which sits above a large drop-off to the left. Here sits the deepest bunker on the course. This hole may be reachable in two by longer hitters. A well-placed drive or second shot to the right will surrender an open approach to the green.

X
12

Hole #13

“Long”There is no translation needed on this hole—what you see is what you get. This is a long and tight fairway. It will demand accuracy off the tee and both length and touch with the approach.

X
13

Hole #14

“Denty Den”The “Pleasant Dell” is the beautiful spot where the green is situated on this drive-and-pitch hole. Framed by the San Francisco Bay, a poor tee shot could spoil your view. Some of the longer hitters can try to drive this green if the wind is right. A tee shot taken over the left edge of the small hill will kick toward the green. For shorter hitters, a tee shot played to the left will offer a view of the green, but errant shots to the right may require a blind pitch over the hill.

X
14

Hole #15

“Kittle Kink”Here you have a “Ticklish Bend,” meaning a dogleg around the lake. This classic “cape” hole is the ultimate in risk-reward. Usually playing against the wind, a tee shot hit near the lake will leave the most open and shortest approach to the green.

X
15

Hole #16

“Lang Whang”A “Good Whack” is called for here if the wind is blowing against you. This long hole will usually require three good shots to safely find the green.

X
16

Hole #17

“Postage Stamp”Pinpoint accuracy is necessary, although this green is much larger than its counterpart at Royal Troon. The wind will play a big factor in your approach. There is really no bailout, so you will just have to airmail your shot to the green.

X
17

Hole #18

“Home”The “Home,” or finishing hole, is where we are heading. This hole is not too long, so keep it straight and you should be able to finish with a smile.
